Designer Spotlight: Chris Crofton at Functional Art

For three decades, Chris Crofton at Functional Art Limited has created innovative ways for interior and exterior spaces to function, not only delivering optimal solutions reflective of each client’s unique sense of aesthetics, but also maximizing efficient use of pre-existing design resources.

” It is an amazing feeling when you collaborate with a client in identifying their actual needs, and creating vital living spaces that allow them to realize their dreams and mirror who they are. Our homes need to provide us with much more than shelter from the storm. They should be welcoming harbours at the end of a demanding workweek. In this unprecedented time we need serene havens where we feel comfortable spending increasingly longer periods. “

This project was a complete kitchen overall. At under 143 square feet and an awkward L shape this small space was inefficient and had no working counter space and precious little storage. By rearranging all of the appliances the working counter space and storage was more than doubled, a pantry was created with enough room for all the small appliances a kitchen needs to run efficiently, and zones were established for ease of use.

The large permanent butcher block has composing and recycling pull outs as well as lots of full extension drawers. Using a luxury vinyl meant a soft standing surface that was very easy to maintain and balanced beautifully with the existing wood flooring.

The home owner chose Bosch appliances in black stainless steel, because they wanted a reliable brand within a set budget.

Creating a hot zone with the double oven that features a microwave, speed oven and true convection meant all in one cooking in one compact area.

This Hot Zone includes the Bosch 800 Series Combination Oven with WiFi connectivity, convection and Speed cooking!

” My inspiration for the unusual bold tiles and mix of contemporary and traditional materials in the kitchen resulted from viewing my client’s many treasures collected during a lifetime of travel to many interesting places throughout the world. Post pandemic, this kitchen is ready to welcome guests and in the meantime it is a great place for creating delicious meals for this couple. “

This gorgeous cooking area features a Bosch induction cooktop with Home Connect and AutoChef to regulate temperature continually during frying. Induction means faster cooking which means faster meals. The homeowners wanted more efficient cooking but also sleek lines.

The appearance of the Bosch 800 Series Wall Hood compliments the cooktop and is super quiet with 600 CFM and LCD display.

Note the way this Bosch Counter depth, Bottom Mount French door refrigerator offers maximum space inside without standing out from the design. This model offers water and ice dispenser and many more cool features.

“ I am grateful to work with such talented suppliers like Diane Rembacz at TA Appliances and Barbecues for all of the appliances, Matt Barrett from Signature by Shelly, and James Joy and his excellent crew and finally, clients who let me make their spaces functional, safe and beautiful. “
