Halloween Traditions: Spider Eggs Treats

Spooky season is here, which means so are all the tricks and more importantly all the treats! One of our favourites this time of year is a Halloween take on rice crispy squares called “spider eggs”! Swapping out the Rice Crispies cereal for Nesquik makes the perfect appearance of giant spider eggs, and then using white chocolate and candy they can be decorated with spider webs and a bright red spider to tie it all together. We had so much fun making these and with how simple and delicious they are, they will quickly become your next seasonal favourite as well!

To make “spider eggs” yourself, you’ll just need:

  1. Start by adding the mini marshmallows and 4 tbsp butter to the large stock pot and put on the stove on medium-low heat. Stir occasionally using a silicone spatula.
  2. While the marshmallows are melting, take the remaining tablespoon of butter and rub it all around the inside of a rectangular cake pan.
  3. Once the marshmallows and butter have melted, add the Nesquik cereal and mix until all of the cereal is covered with the marshmallow and butter mixture.
  4. Pour into the buttered cake pan and use the spatula to flatten the top. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes to set.
  5. While the spider eggs are setting in the fridge, melt down the white chocolate melts and pour them into a ziplock bag.
  6. Once the spider eggs have cooled and set, cut a small piece off the corner of the ziplock bag full of white chocolate and carefully draw a spider web pattern ontop of the spider eggs.
  7. Cut the string liquorice into eight 2inch pieces and place in two fanned out semi-circles to make the shape of spider legs, then place the large red gumdrop in the middle of the liquorice legs to complete your spider.
  8. Allow the white chocolate to set before cutting and serving!

These also work great if you use a muffin pan instead of a cake pan, and smaller gumdrops to make smaller individual-sized spider eggs! And you can watch us make them for our YouTube channel here!
